The Wrangler is an unlockable secondary weapon for the Engineer. It is part of the Engineer Update and was announced on Day 2.
While selected, it allows the Engineer to take control of his Sentry Gun's aim, and the Sentry Gun stops aiming automatically.
The Wrangler also gives the Sentry Gun a shield that absorbs 66% of incoming damage, doubles the gun's firing rate, and increases the missile launch rate at level 3.
You may use the sentry missiles to Rocket Jump, this ability is particularly useful for reaching hard to get places. [1] (Also note that you can use the normal gunfire to launch yourself upwards, but you probably won't get too far without dying [2])
Trivia
- The Wrangler, as with the Frontier Justice and the Gunslinger, appears to have been designed by Radigan Conagher, the Engineer's ancestor. This is shown by a hidden link in the Engineer Update.
- The main component of the Wrangler bears a striking resemblance to the control pad of the Atari 2600.
- The other part appears to resemble a type of antenna
- If a level 3 sentry gun is wrangled, it can survive taunts that would normally destroy it. This is due to the fact that taunts do 500 points of damage, whereas a Wrangled Sentry effectively has 648 HP. It could also theoretically survive a backstab or a fully-charged headshot with the Sniper Rifle, though both are impossible to achieve on a Sentry.
- If you hold down the primary and/or the secondary fire keys for a extended amount of time and let go, the Engineer will shake his hand like it was becoming strained from holding back the joystick of the Wrangler.
Bugs
- If you manage to kill a player with a wrangled level 3 Sentry Gun's rockets, the kill feed will show a level 3 Sentry kill icon, and not the Wrangler's respective kill icon.
