Unconfirmed Location

The Spy has NEVER been confirmed to be from France, and this needs to be fixed. While there are many French aspects of his character, there are also aspects of many other nationalities. The accent is also definitely not French, though it has hints of it. The Country of origin should be put back as unknown.

Don't forget to sign your posts with ~~~~. But I do agree with you. We can't tell exactly where he's from especially because of what language he speaks. If you compile everything he says from the game, we can tell he speaks 3 different foreign languages: Italian, Spanish, and French. We know one of his responses is: "Prego!" which means "you are welcome" an his other response: "Ohhh, merde" which means "Oh, shit" in Italian. Another one of his responses is: "My appreciation, amigo" and "Amigo" means "Friend" in Spanish. As for French, he says: "Is this... mon dieu!" which means "Is this... my god!" and "Ah, ma petite chou-flour" which means "My little cauliflower". So from this, all we can tell is that he is multi-lingual. As for the French scene from the Meet the Spy (Spy and Scout's Mom head towards a moped with French music playing) we can't tell he's from France from that either. The Spy and the Scout's Mom were in a romantic relationship. The best place to go for a stereotypical romantic get-away is Paris, France (the city of love). Sure, it could be that the Spy lives in France, but it could also mean they were having a romantic fun-time out there too. So all in all, you're right. We can't tell where he's from. He's a mystery wrapped in an enigma (just like his Bio says).--Eh_Leck_Trick 01:35, 12 June 2009 (UTC)
Merde is french for shit, you idiot. Everyone just give over. He's french. End. Smashman 17:21, 12 June 2009 (UTC)
Valve have stated that the accents are not supposed to be accurate and in several cases are intentionally inaccurate (the Sniper being named). The Spy's voice is an American VA's approximation of a French accent. This combined with all the other evidence for his french-ness make the Spy's nationality clear, even if it is not explicitly stated. Note that Valve never said the Heavy was Russian either. --Wilsonator 17:38, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

The Spy says Amigo (friend) and Fuego (fire) which are both Spanish. He also speaks really bad French in Meet the Spy. It should definitely say Western Europe. FishType1 22:19, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

The spy's French at the end of Meet the Spy is indeed grammatically incorrect. "Ma Petit Chou-fleur." He is addressing a woman, but 'chou-fleur' is a male noun, with no female form. It should be Mon; this would point at him speaking French, but not natively. Indeed, I don't think he's confirmed being 'French' at all, and Valve has said nothing of the sort.. --Ayeaka

Why does everyone ignore my point about Valve intentionally not going for correct grammar/accents?--Wilsonator 00:45, 17 June 2009 (UTC)

So he speaks french, he could also be from Canada. Unless Valve officially states that he's from France, you can't just assume his country of origin because otherwise you're just making stuff up. Keep it at Unknown. --Sinchi

Ugly Pictures

I couldn't help but notice that the gmod pose of a spy's silhouette is a little awkward. --El

The spy's picture is the only one from red team, we should try to get one from blue. Make em' all match.--Greyfox.ca 07:52, 4 October 2007 (CST)

Actually if you think about it, it fits quite well. He's even standing next to the sniper! )=D Wilsonator 17:01, 4 November 2007 (CST)

To clear things up, the picture I was referring to was the one where a spy is about to stab a heavy --El

To clear things up even more, I was responding to GreyFox's seperate post which was somehow merged with your own topic. Not quite sure how that happened =P --Wilsonator 17:25, 20 December 2007 (CST)

Disguise properties

Has anybody been able to verify whether a disguised spy's health visibly decreases in your mouseover if you shoot at him? -Puddington 12:46, 9 October 2007 (CST)

UPDATE: I verified with my roommate a couple hours ago: the spy's mouseover health indicator does not decrease when he is attacked in this case. -Puddington 22:25, 11 October 2007 (CDT)

Choice of class

About this tip:

  • When you disguise yourself, you take the name of an enemy player that is playing the same class as you. It is crucial that you try to use a class that is well represented by the enemy side to decrease the risk of coming face to face with the person you stole the name from.

I don't think it makes any sense. Statistically, you always have a 1 / (number of enemies) chance of coming face to face with the guy you impersonate, whether he is the only one in this class or not.

What do you think?

When you play a class that is used only by one person, such as the spy, and run into him, he will immediatly know somethings fishy and when he sees his own name he will kill you. Taking the guise of a widely used class by the enemy is better as the one you share a name with will be less likely to check if you have the same name as him. - DontEatRawHagis

  • 21 Dec 07

Choosing to disguise as a class that is represented prevents you being randomly assigned a name, and sticking out to enemies who pay attention to what classes their teammates are. Nothing points you out faster than an enemy seeing a Pyro who they just saw kill 4 people as a sniper/soldier running through their own base.

Aye, the reasoning for picking a class that's actually on the enemy team is because people watch the death logs. At least I do, and if I see someone kill someone with a rocket, and then that guy walks by as a pyro, and I'm not near a spawn... Then he's a spy. -- WanderingFox (Talk • Contribs) 09:29, 21 December 2007 (CST)
Equally important is to pick a class that makes sense where you uncloak. If you see a sniper among sentry guns, or an engineer on the sniper deck, or anyone running toward you for any reason, it looks suspicious no matter what his name. Of course, any disguise is basically useless against a competent team. Eddycurrents 10:40, 7 January 2008 (CST)

Spy Strategy...not sure I can really add it to the list but...

Equipped weapon when disguised

Does anybody know which weapon you'll show up as wielding while disguised? Is it always the target class' primary weapon or does it vary?

Primary weapon only --Wilsonator 17:39, 12 November 2007 (CST)

With the newest update, the spy can choose what weapon to show([1])

With the newest of new updates, the spy can choose what weapon to show that corrolates with the enemy team member he's disguised as. If they have a flare gun, you can pull out your sapper, hit the last disguise button, and tada, you have a flare gun.

However, if they have no character that matches your disguise, you merely gain their name and have your normal disguise weapons, regardless of what unlockables they have. Ex. If they have a sandman and you're diguised as a pyro, you won't have the axtinguisher.

Spy Screenshot

Could someone go get one from the BLU team, and replace the one that is currently being used?

All of the other class screenshots are blue, except for the Spy's.--WanderingFox 12:20, 14 November 2007 (CST)

Taunt Sapper and Disguise

Is there a taunt for the sapper, also when disguised do taunts come out as the one you are disguised as or do they not work? DontEatRawHagis 11:12, 29 November 2007 (CST)

The sapper does not have a taunt, the disguise case replaces it (so that the spy has three taunts like everyone else). I'm also pretty sure taunting does not work while disguised, but I'm not certain. -- WanderingFox 11:23, 29 November 2007 (CST)
You are correct; taunting does not work when in disguise. Wildfire 18:13, 22 December 2007 (CST)

He can say what he says when disguised as a enimy spy,but will noy do the movement.I have the game on the xbox so i don't know if this goes for the pc and ps3.Backroom

I was just noticing that something was wrong with my spy when I got a 3rd person Perspective and couldnt move my character, reason. I hit the taunt button while disguised. Now I dont know if he is actually doing the taunt but I know it set itself up to do a taunt causing my character to pause for a few moments. Can anyone else repeat this? Ive been able to do it constantly and I want to be sure its not just me - DontEatRawHagis 11:03, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
That happnes when you try to taunt while disguised as anyone friendly, and while you are disguised as an enemy Spy. - Kurtis, 20 July 2008
This no longer happens due to the unlockable achievement weapons as part of the disguise arsenal. This is to avoid crossover taunts, like a Sandman Taunt and a Bat Taunt. This may be fixed in the future, but as of now, the spy cannot taunt when he has a disguise. -

The Mysterious Mustache June 1, 2009.

Country of Origin

Can someone please cite their sources for the "Country of Origin: Franco-Spain". Various users keep changing this information back and forth, most recently it was changed to "Country of Origin: Somewhere in the region between France and Spain" and has now been changed back again to "Country of Origin: Franco-Spain". Quoting of sources will resolve this. What I know about "Francos Spain" you could fit on a post-it note but I didn't think it was an official area as such, more named because of the period in history within Spain (after the Spanish Civil War between 1939 and 1978, mostly under Fransisco Franco). I'm presuming the "Franco-Spain" is quoted somwhere for it to have been specifically used. --Aurora 07:56, 18 December 2007 (CST)

there's a great deal of discussion on this over at Wikipedia. -- WanderingFox (Talk • Contribs) 08:21, 18 December 2007 (CST)
I had changed it to the regions version, I thought it flowed better. -El
Could you clarify what you mean by "the regions version"? (also please check the Help:Discussion pages for guidelines on adding notes to discussions) --Aurora 10:41, 18 December 2007 (CST)
The version you mentioned above. --El
Ahh, I see, ok I understand. Then I guess you must disagree with the Franco-Spain? I don't know much about "Francos Spain" as mentioned, do you know anything about it and can you explain why it's incorrect? --Aurora 17:36, 18 December 2007 (CST)
'Franco-Spain' is just a more concise way of saying 'Somewhere between France and Spain', which is kinda vague and doesn't flow as well imo. People from that region refer to themselves as Franco-Spanish and a few from that area in the TF2 community have even attested that the Spy's accent originates from their region. I don't see why they'd have any reason to lie about this so I trust them.--Wilsonator 03:44, 19 December 2007 (CST)
Fair enough --El
I guess that closes that open review, I will remove the message and add a pointer to here if anyone else should object. --Aurora 12:14, 29 December 2007 (CST)
Clearly not Franco-Spain. We don't know officialy, but in the game he sometimes says Prego when thanking, which is an Italian word for "I pray". He also wears a pinstripe suit, Italian Mafia anyone? Pedroshin 16:44, 13 April 2008 (CDT)
I'd think easily that the Spy, being a Gentlemen, would know several languages (I vaguely remember hearing somewhere he knows several), so that's probably an explanation for him saying 'Prego'. As for his accent, it's Franco-Spanish imo. NNR 22:50, 11 June 2008 (UTC)
You know, you could just say "Western Europe". User:AAAAAARRRRRAAAAAARRRRR 22:03, 13 April 2008 (CDT)
Somehow, I believe the Spy is from the French city-state, Monaco. Their known for learning both French and Italian.

minespatch 11:54, 13 August 2008 (PST)

I think the most important thing here is that we don't know and that given the Spy's nature odds are we aren't supposed to know. Nobody should be citing a specific country in absence of something from Valve. For all we know, the spy has double, triple, and quadruple-crossed so many sides so many times that even he isn't sure anymore. --Terr 20:13, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
I agree, and btw right now it's stated that he's French. Is there any offical source? Or is that just assumed? However I think that in meet the spy he does seems to be French. --AureX 18:30, 19 May 2009 (UTC)

Bug Behaviour

Aurora - I'd argue it's useful to know about existing bugs on these pages so players are not surprised by them. Wildfire 07:49, 30 December 2007 (CST)

I'd argue that case for Exploits and Glitches, which we have pages for. However bug behavior is something that may only apply to individuals and as such needs testing by multiple people before confirming that it is indeed an issue. The TF2 Wiki is not the place for posting bugs, opinions on game design or individual experiences. If you feel the need to do this, visit the Steam forum, thats what it was designed and setup for. --Aurora 08:35, 30 December 2007 (CST)
What exactly is the difference between a "Glitch" and a "Bug"? why is a frontstab a bug and not a glitch?
You are right that bugs may occur to individuals; however, I see front-stabs occurring to myself and to other players, and being done by myself and other players. If no one else was experiencing this, it is likely I would have noticed.
Finally, I think you're going off at a bit of a tangent. I've posted about a bug here. Why are you talking about opinions on game design and/or individual experiences? Wildfire 14:46, 1 January 2008 (CST)
"Opinions on game design" refers to the Interface Control‎ article, which has still not been addressed. "Individual experiences" refers to the 'bugs' which people have posted (most but not all unconfirmed). Glitch = Confirmed bug, Exploit = The use of a Glitch, it does explain this on both of the articles and indeed the "Facestab" is already on the Exploits article. I was not "going off at a bit of a tangent", I do however take issue with postings of those "Individual experiences" on the wiki and posting information in to incorrect articles (because I have to then spend a long time reviewing, checking and clean them up if needed). To re-iterate, the TF2 Wiki is not a public forum, the Steam forums are the place to post bugs so that others can confirm the facts and Valve can then address them. Yes the TF2 Wiki should give users valuable information (that is the purpose if it after all), but it should be based on confirmed information applicable to all TF2 users. --Aurora 12:20, 2 January 2008 (CST)

Similar to the G-Man

I noticed that The Spies' revolver taunt does the same animation (brush suit and adjusts tie) as what the Gman does in the Half Life games. I think we should put this in but I don't really know where. Any ideas?--CountDOODOO 06:46, 25 January 2008 (CST)

Umm, but thats just a habitual movement...wouldn't you also have to reference every character had the same movement habit? --Aurora 06:59, 25 January 2008 (CST)

Unkown Taunts

There is a lot of taunts not listed here like:

  • "Promess not to bleed on my suit and ill kill you quickly !"---"You are all incopetent cowards !"
  • "Ill be seeeeeing youuuu !"
  • "Tikaboo !"
  • "Why dont he just give up partners ?"
  • "(Whistle)"
  • "Evryone back to the base, partner."
  • "Just let your weapons donw and walk away"(Its "let" not "put")
  • "Im coming for you !"
  • "May I make a suggestion? RUN!"
  • "Your all of you quite out of your dets!"
  • "You know! Hiding wont save you."
  • "They should call you khwayners doctor NOOOOOOOOOOO !" (BTW i didnt understand what is khwyners ?)
  • "Youuu SUCK !"
  • "Zis WILL be Ze last time you see me !"

What are these ? (If you want I can give you the .WAV files) --The_Scorpion 07:31, 5 February 2008 (CST)

There are lot's of quotes within the files that haven't cropped up or people aren't sure when they occur. I've heard a good one that goes "I'm going to gut you like a cornish game hen" or similar, but I don't know which actions trigger it. They will get added when they are understood, but probably in the Spy responses --Aurora 06:53, 5 February 2008 (CST)
Can I add them in Spy responses under "Others" ? There are a lot more ( for other classes) BTW there is a "I'm going to gut you like a cornish game hen" in this page under the knife taunts... --The_Scorpion 07:31, 5 February 2008 (CST)
Oh yeah, I never noticed that, maybe it should be in Spy responses as well... Anyway, yes add a new section but add a description like Note: the following responses have not been assigned to actions due to being unvarified. Or something similar, just so people will know and assign them to actions if they hear them. --Aurora 07:08, 5 February 2008 (CST)
Did it! --The_Scorpion 07:31, 5 February 2008 (CST)
Few edits on the quotes, its "Peekaboo" and "They should call you whiners Doctor NOOOOOOO!" and it is not "Let your weps down" its "lay your weps down". Complete List of TF2 Taunts--Mr Feline 16:54, 16 March 2008 (CDT)
If anyones interested I'm going to add a link here to what the cornish game hen is, alot of people think hes saying "gape hen"... but its "game", heres the link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cornish_game_hen interestingly enough it was founded by a French immigrant, so perhaps thats hinting that the spy is french>? only a frenchmen would be so honorably mention with pride something a frenchmen invited. Only someone with such French pride would say or mention this? no? -- The Unbeholden 06:32, 19 October 2008 (UTC)
I don't know about pride, it's just an expression. If I said I was going to slice someone up like a pineapple, it doesn't mean i'm suddenly South American.--Wilsonator 16:12, 19 October 2008 (UTC)

Spy Disguise while Cloaked?

I was reading the strat section and was a bit confused by the whole "disguise while cloaked and people can see the smoke", has this been confirmed? I have seen the smoke but that has always been when a spy cloaks after he has chosen a disguise and you still see the smoke until he is fully cloaked. I've disguised while cloaked in front of people many times and haven't been spotted. Am I just being insane? Or is this what actually happens? --Mr Feline 17:05, 16 March 2008 (CDT)

I'm almost positive that you can see disguise smoke even after you are cloaked, which makes disguising right after cloaking a bit counterproductive. I make it a habit to count to four right after I select a disguise to ensure that any of said smoke is out of sight. -beep 12:30, 6 April 2008 (CDT)
Once you are fully cloaked, smoke is no problem, it can't be seen. Also, as for counting, sure you can count if you want to. But you can tell when you are completely cloaked. First, cloaking makes a sound, secondly, you can tell my the gui in the lower left hand corner that you've fully cloaked. Once you take on a disguise, it will change to said disguise, but a white outline of the Spy will then move to the left side the the disguise gui then if I'm not mistaken it will disappear. Once that has finished, you know you're ready to go.•Delkin525
you dont have to be fully cloaked. as soon as you start cloaking, you are safe to disguise there wont be any smoke•shultays

You don't have to be fully cloaked. Hit Cloak, disguise, uncloak and there won't be any smoke coming from you. I'll have a video of that shortly.

This shows the effect of dsisguising and cloaking at different times, and in different orders. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCX3lAULT5A --Kez 19:29, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

Bio and AKA

The Spy's bio hasn't been released yet, right? Then why is there one on this page - it looks really fanmade and isn't in line with the rest of the classes. Also, what's up with the "AKA"'s on every class page? When I call someone an idiot, it doesn't mean he's suddenly AKA "idiot". It looks very unencyclopaedic for a wiki this way. Better restrict us to the official Valve information.

EDIT: Same goes for Mottos. Sorry, I couldn't find a better place to put this. --Tinker 13:11, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

To answer your first question, to stand in until it's offically released, Mottos are in fact official and sourced for Trailer 2. AKAs aren't official as such other than being sourced from the game but I quite like them. =P--Wilsonator 16:28, 28 August 2008 (UTC)
Ah, right, fair enough. I was just saying because people use this place as reference a lot, in a way that "the Spy's natural ability was discovered at young age" can be used in some arguments with this as source, which is then a little off. I hope I didn't sound like a very angry nitpicker. Probably did :p--Tinker 19:15, 31 August 2008 (UTC)

Average Damage

The TF2 stats show that the knife's average damage is under 125. That's a lot of missed backstabs to bring down a weapon that can do 450. Metteloid 23:15, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

Skins, skins, and-you guessed it-more skins

I was playing in Garry's Mod, and I saw the Spy had 22 skins, 11 RED skins and 11 BLU skins. But I looked between all the skins, and I couldn't find any differences. Does anyone else have an explanation? --TIGERmedic 00:37, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

  • The skins are supposed to have the paper mask for disguises on. I'm not sure why there's one more than there should be. Putnamehere3145 07:20, 17 May 2009 (UTC)

Is this data still correct? Since the Engi update?

Sentry Gun Level 1: 6 seconds Level 2: 7 seconds Level 3: 9 seconds Dispenser, teleport entrance and exit: 6 seconds

Spy from the Belgium!

In "Spy" article spy born in France.. That's don't right. Spy from Belgium! If you'll see his smoke, you understand that!! He smoke like a belgian people. You'll say that he talk French? Ok, in Belgium people talk French and Deutch! Please edit Spy bio!

In Meet the Spy, the Spy speaks FRENCH, while stereotypically FRENCH music plays as he looks at a photo of himself walking towards a moped- a vehicle associated with the FRENCH. Just curious, and this is purely cosmetic, but under the Information heading it mentions the Sapsucker strategy as common and the Stab-and-Sap as less common. But with today's play style, isn't it the other way around? I rarely ever see anyone sap then stab. Myself included as a Spy Main. I just think it's much more of a constant happening where it's a Stab-and-Sap over a Sapsucker. Spy Master Kaze 00:37, 14 September 2009 (UTC)

Shouldn't someone edit the fact that with the inclusion of Mercenary, Soldier of fortune, Grizzled veteran, and Primeval warrior that all characters can get a Misc item now? or just change it to "they are the only classes with personal misc items"? Zenos 13:52, 9 May 2010 (UTC)

Error in trivia?

In trivia, the bullet about what the Red spy calls the BLU Scout's mother seems to be wrong.

The BLU Scout's Mother is in a relationship with the RED Spy. A file in the BLU base contains photos documenting their activities. The Spy refers to her as "Ma Petite Chou-fleur" ("My Little Cauliflower").

I heard it as, "Ma petite cher fleur." Cher is french for the adjective "dear" as in "My dear." "Ma petite cher fleur" would literally translate to, "My dear little flower." which makes much more sense to me than, "My little cauliflower."
