Talk:Soldier
From TF2 Wiki
Does he say "Maggots" or "Make it!" as his Rocket Launcher taunt? I think he says 'Make it' but I guess Maggots sounds pretty similar too. What do you think?
Does he say "Cuh-Ribbed" or "Code Red" ?
Does he say 'Cuh-Ribbed' or 'Code Red' as his Rocket Launcher Taunt? I think it might be 'Code Red', but IDK. Anyone have any ideas?
I say Cuh-ribbed, it doesn't really sound like 'Code Red'. Also- he's definitely saying 'maggots', the steretypical boot camp sergeants of whom the soldier is a parody would say it all the time. --Wilsonator 03:11, 9 November 2007 (CST)
Yeah, I guess it does sound more like 'maggots' than 'make it'. But I still don't understand about Cuh-Ribbed.
What does Cuh-Ribbed mean?
It's the way I think he's saying 'cribbed'.Why he's saying that I don't know but that's what it sounds like =P --Wilsonator 05:41, 9 November 2007 (CST)
Maybe he's saying "Correct"? Just an idea though.--CountDOODOO 14:40, 24 January 2008 (CST)
I was always pretty sure he's saying "Good Riddance." Listen to it a few times and let me know what you think --Leon 00:34, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
I had strongly believed the Soldier was saying "Cuh-rit" as in "Crit", since crit rocket kills are a thing to express fondness for. --Snakexdude11 09:46, 22 May 2008
- I was always fairly sure he was saying "Cuh-rit". Among the community, the soldier's crit rockets are pretty infamous, and even the Scout acknowledges the lethality of them in one of his responses- After dominating a Soldier: "Dere ain't enough crits in da world ta kill me!" Responses Article Deleted?
I posted some quotes of the Soldiers' responses, but it was deleted. Anyone know why?--CountDOODOO 16:35, 9 November 2007 (CST)
Yeah that was me, it's not deleted- it only appeared in the first place because you forgot the section break at the end and so it went into the weapons section which went kinda funny.
You'd have to add a section for it in the template, but it would be a better idea to post them all in the response rules article. I think taunts are enough for each individual class page. --Wilsonator 17:05, 9 November 2007 (CST)
Alright, I see now. I guess I could add them into the response rules section but I don't think it would work out. If we had all the responses for each class (and there is a lot), wouldn't it crowd up the Response Rules article? Do you think we should make a new article for each class and list all the responses there instead? I think that would work out much better.
Also, I'm a little new to Wiki editing. How do you make a section break? --CountDOODOO 18:30, 9 November 2007 (CST)
I made an article Soldier Responses. But, I'm having some trouble putting it in the already existing Soldier article. I just don't know where to put it without messing up the text that's already there.
Can someone please try to put an internal link to the Soldier Responses.--CountDOODOO 09:31, 11 November 2007 (CST)
Advanced Strategy
I'm moving my advanced strategy information (written by me originally) into this wiki. The first page I'm doing is soldier, and rather than making a new page for it, I'm just going to put it under a new section (Advanced Strategy).
Feel free to move it around, or split it off into another page once it's up. --WanderingFox 10:07, 14 November 2007 (CST)
Basic information is now up, wiki links coming next. Again, feel free to move/split off this section. --WanderingFox 11:25, 14 November 2007 (CST)
Move the Advanced Strategy?
I think we should have the Advanced Strategy for the Soldier in a different article. The way it is right now feels too crowded. I believe that each individual class page should give a general overview of the character and not go into too much depth. Soldier Match-ups and Soldier Responses already has it's own articles, so what do you guys think?
Should we move it? --CountDOODOO 14:04, 29 November 2007 (CST)
- Perfectly OK with me, hell I even suggested the idea when I put the section in originally. Though do remember to also move the Engineer one, and let me know. That way when I do the others (working on demoman atm, but will be a little while) I know how to format the page :P -- WanderingFox 14:12, 29 November 2007 (CST)
- Fine with me as well, I think your right (whoever you are at the top :p) it should be an overview. However, I don't want to do this just yet for one simple reason - I remember reading a comment by Nos somewhere, when the class pages were first written, that he wanted a strategy on each classes page. Now if he meant a complete in depth strategy with all the maps on I'm not sure. I'll post a message on his talk page but he is quite busy at the minute and not on Steam, so until we get his view on this I will mark it open for review to get other peoples opinions on it. --Aurora 14:33, 29 November 2007 (CST)
- I believe he just wanted a quick and dirty strategy section. I added the advanced section because I didn't want to make a new page (as they were initially rather small, it ended up being quite large by the time I finished writing them however >_<) They were mainly just left as is due to lack of complaint, and laziness on my part. Either way, I say leave the basic strategy section, and move everything else off to its own page (everything I wrote should be at the bottom, so from the Advanced Strategy header onward). -- WanderingFox 14:44, 29 November 2007 (CST)
- Added Engineer for open review as well, link goes to a small talk comment pointing them here (to keep all the discussion in one place). -- WanderingFox 14:50, 29 November 2007 (CST)
- Also added Spy as even though this isn't an Advanced Strategy as such, it is getting large enough to warrant one --Aurora 15:13, 29 November 2007 (CST)
- Generally speaking, if there's a consensus from the group, go for it. As far as I'm concerned, I'm just another editor on here, who happens to have write access to the mediawiki install files. --Nos 09:50, 30 November 2007 (CST)
- Now Nos has kindly installed the collapsible boxes we have another option. A new page can be created as mentioned but also transclude that page into the Classes pages and defaulted to collapse therefore only taking up a few lines. This would probably be best of both worlds, giving access if the users wish to see it (by clicking on the Show link). Thoughts? --Aurora 17:06, 30 November 2007 (CST)
- Actually, I installed them :P -- WanderingFox 17:54, 30 November 2007 (CST)
I like the idea of a collapsible box. We should try it out. But what will we do if it gets too big?--CountDOODOO 17:40, 30 November 2007 (CST)
- Get's too big for what? the information will be in a completely separate article, just pulled into the class page via transclusion (a way of including information from one article directly into another). --Aurora 17:44, 30 November 2007 (CST)
So, we're going to put the "Advanced Strategies" into a different article? I'm worried that as time goes on, people will add more and more strategies and then the Soldier page would get too big. So, I change my mind now. We should put that Advanced Strategies into a different article and a link should be listed right next to the Match-ups and Responses in the Additional Articles Section. --CountDOODOO 18:23, 30 November 2007 (CST)
- This is the current plan, yes :P -- WanderingFox 18:37, 30 November 2007 (CST)
- Is there a time limit before we move the section? I think we should we wait one more week and see if anyone else responds. If everyone seems to be ok with it, then we should move it already. --CountDOODOO 17:22, 1 December 2007 (CST)
- Seeing as how you're the original requester, it's been a week since the request, and there has been no indication of anyone against the move, I'm going to split the information out. -- WanderingFox 09:38, 6 December 2007 (CST)
Medic partner comment
I would argue that a soldier is one of the worst classes to uber. A demo or a Pyro are both better choices than even a heavy
- And I would argue that they're one of the most useful. It's all subjective, but the ability for the soldier to fire wildly with little regard to his own health while he is ubered makes him a very formidable foe. The demoman gains almost nothing from being ubered as he's an indirect damage class, and quite frankly in face to face combat is just a weaker, faster version of the soldier. I'll agree with pyro however, as a pyro with no chance of dieing becomes a fireball of destruction :P -- WanderingFox (Talk • Contribs) 07:33, 14 December 2007 (CST)
- It depends on the circumstances. Many ubers are used to plow through sentries, but good sentry placement plus an attentive team backing it can prevent them from getting within the best heavy/pyro range. This is one common case where ubered-demos can be used effectively: Place stickies, retreat, detonate, advance. --Praestat 20:57, 14 December 2007 (CST)
- Or the ubered medic just walks in first and draws fire? -- WanderingFox (Talk • Contribs) 10:59, 15 December 2007 (CST)
- Your all right. It depends on the circumstances like Praestat mentioned. When I play medic (for instance) have uber, and want to take out an sg or two the first player I look for is a pyro. If I want to plow through a hoard, I look for a heavy, soldier, or demo (in that order usually). If I'm playing a demo, I really don't expect to be ubered and think the medic should know to uber other classes depending on what needs doing. As mentioned it's all subjective and depends on your personal playing choices. Because TF2 Wiki does not require a neutral writing style, personal opinions will be reflected by each author, article's should be generalized and taken as a 'usual circumstances' approach. It is interesting to read the way others prefer to play though and the these discussion pages are what that's for, articles shouldn't just be edited because you think your approach is better. --Aurora 12:32, 15 December 2007 (CST)
Similar to Hartman
I noticed that the Soldier is similar to Drill Instructor Hartman from the movie Full Metal Jacket. After you read below, Should we include a section in the Soldier article that shows how he is similar to Hartman? I know we should but I don't know where to put it. I put proof below on how they're similar just in case you guys don't see it. I got the quotes from WikiQuote. You can also go to Soundboards to see hear some of the taunts. Some of those were probably rejected since I've never heard them before so I put three question marks next to those.
Maggot:
- "Do you maggots understand that?" Hartman
- "Maggot!" Soldier
Twinkletoes & Death Warrants:
- Who's the slimy little communist shit twinkle-toed cocksucker down here, who just signed his own death warrant?" Hartman
- "Take your lumps like a man, Private Twinkletoes." Soldier
- "You sissified maggot scum have just signed your own death warrants" Soldier (???)
Worm:
- "You little piece of shit! You look like a fucking worm! I'll bet it was you!" Hartman
- "The worm has turned, gentlemen." Soldier
- "You are a spineless worm." Soldier (???)
Numbnuts:
- "What is your major malfunction, numbnuts?!!" Hartman
- "Which of you numbnuts let us down?" Soldier
God & Jesus:
- "So you can give your heart to Jesus, but your ass belongs to the Corps" -Hartman
- "If God had wanted you to live he would not have created me!" Soldier
Love being Soldiers:
- "You have dishonored this entire unit!" Soldier
- "Private Joker, why did you join my beloved Corps?" Hartman
Outstanding:
- "Outstanding!" Soldier
- "Out-fucking-standing!" Hartman
- "Outstanding!" Hartman
War Face:
- "You got a war face? Aaaaaaaagh! That's a war face. Now let me see your war face!" Hartman
- After a kill w/ teh shovel or as a taunt, the Soldier yells "Aaaaargh!"
Vomit:
- "You are walking vomit" Soldier (???)
- "Tonight, you pukes will sleep with your rifles" Hartman
--CountDOODOO 14:39, 24 January 2008 (CST)
- That's opinionated though. I've heard a lot of the soldier's quotes from other movies as well. He's just a generic American soldier/drill instructor/etc. --WanderingFox (Talk • Contribs) 18:44, 24 January 2008 (CST)
- Perhaps a seperate section for pop culture references in TF2? -Oh, and he's a generic DI because Hartman popularised that image.--Wilsonator 02:49, 25 January 2008 (CST)
- Yes, subjective. Most characters in books/films/games have some basis from other sources in the creators imagination whether conscious or not. The Sniper always reminds me of Mick "Crocodile" Dundee ('Thats not a knife....this is a knife') and yes the Soldier is similar to Hartman (one of my all time favourite film characters, maybe that's why I play him so much?) but that sort of information is ostensible and probably best kept to forums or blogs. Of course, that's only my opinion....
- Incidentally most of Hartmans diaglog was ad-libbed by the guy himself, Ronald Lee Ermey, who was actually a Former U.S. Marine Drill Instructor. He only got the role because he videotaped himself improvising insulting dialogue while being pelted with oranges and tennis balls. In spite of the distractions he rattled off an unbroken string of insults for 15 minutes without flinching, ducking, or repeat himself while being hit. Legend. Hartman quotes: http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Full_Metal_Jacket
Do we all agree that we should add in a part that says that he sounds like a generic DI?--CountDOODOO 06:48, 25 January 2008 (CST)
Nah, not much point really, imo.--Wilsonator 07:50, 25 January 2008 (CST)
From Kansas?
How do we know he's from Kansas? Is this just a guess? Find us some sound files of people from kansas so we can listen and make comparisons on how similar he is to them.--CountDOODOO 13:47, 26 February 2008 (CST)
That might prove futile given all the people who've said there are innacuracies among the classes' accents when they're clearly meant to be from someplace. However, pretty much all the canon info on the Soldier is on Steampowered. I've re-instated the bio that was removed, replacing the motto with it.
http://storefront.steampowered.com/v2/index.php?area=game&AppId=997&cc=US -- ThInTrM 22:36, 27 February 2008 (CST)
- So, do we know where he's from? Are there any clues? I heard that people from the midwest, usually have a strong military tradition so the Soldier could be from there. But I really don't know. Anyone have any ideas where he's from?--CountDOODOO 13:24, 28 February 2008 (CST)
- Unsure, I can't see it on Valves "Meet the Soldier" page (http://storefront.steampowered.com/v2/index.php?area=game&AppId=985&cc=US).
- By the way, regarding the Demoman, it does state on the "Meet the Demoman" page (http://storefront.steampowered.com/v2/index.php?area=game&AppId=997&cc=US) that he is from Ullapool. --Aurora 13:59, 28 February 2008 (CST)
- Yeah, I messed up there when I was deleting things. I never have explored Steam anyways. I'm on the Xbox 360 so Steam isn't a very relevant site for me. Xbox.com is more me. I watched all my vids on Orange.half-life2.comso I guess they left out that little detail. No worries though. Next time I'll do a google search to see where it pops up before I go delete-happy again.--CountDOODOO 14:59, 28 February 2008 (CST)
Screamin' Eagles
The Soldier juggles his spare rocket and grenade ammo while shouting "Screamin' Eagles!", what does this mean? I have always wondered. Can there be a article made to reference this? The Unbeholden 15:42, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
- Go to List of references and scroll down to Soldier. Tada!--Wilsonator 20:45, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
- LOL, thanks, could you make the Screamin' Eagles a hyper link, so it leads to the references, Its hard to find any link that goes to references. anyways thanks. The Unbeholden 20:51, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
Splash Damage
The Demoman grenade launcher and sticky bomb launcher don't have splash damage listed, so Why is splash damage listed on this page? We should just consolidate splash damage into the normal listed damage, just put it under the "Minimum" amount of damage done. The range of the explosion and what damage it does at what range could be listed, if so then we should put it under the Demoman stickybomb, and grenade launcher as well.
Grammatical Error
"But with the slow stray of the rockets and the fact that he's got only four at a time makes the soldier difficult to master." should read "But the slow stray of the rockets and the fact that he's got only four at a time make the soldier difficult to master."
Unused animations
I found unused animations of different reloading that looks more like the RPG Launcher from Classic, should this be noted? Dman 05:30, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
The Soldier in the new comic
The Soldier makes a few appearances in that new comic that was released December 9th and he appears to be wearing his helmet at every occasion, including socializing with his friend(s) and even when he's flirting with women. Maybe a funny thing to note?... --Count Hanx 23:48, 9 December 2009 (UTC)
- I think it should be noted, we noted the Red Spy's mask-during-intercourse quirk. NoizeBlaze 00:14, 10 December 2009 (UTC)
Soldier's Name
It's Entirely possible that the soldier's name is JOHN doe. Given his level of intelligence, and the fact that he was fooled by a computer voice, I think he might have misspelled it. I wouldn't put it past him. --Blackwolf99 19:05, 16 December 2009 (UTC)
- Or maybe he had really stupid/evil parents? --Fantomas 19:14, 16 December 2009 (UTC)
- It's possible, but that would unfortunately make it speculation while as far as we can tell from his mailbox he refers to himself as Jane Doe. --Wilsonator 21:51, 16 December 2009 (UTC)
- It's usually a placeholder name. Being that he is so paranoid, I would assume its so that they can't find his real name, whatever that may be. JJ12121616 22:19, 21 December 2009 (UTC)
- Look exactly at his mailbox in the comic http://www.teamfortress.com/war/soldier/ . It says MISTER JANE DOE. He didn't shorten Mister to Mr., making it possibly his first giving name and Jane the second. BTW the suggestion of the evil/stupid parent could be also right, making it to somewhat of a reference http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Gbtm-93oqE Los Spackos 20:51, 9 February 2010 (UTC)
Gunboats
Is there currently any way to get the Gunboats besides crafting? JJ12121616 22:19, 21 December 2009 (UTC)
Name
I added an explanation of the soldier's name, based on the suggestion that his wife is named Jane Doe given by "Mr. Jane Doe."
- Annoyingly with wikis, we can't really post speculation unless it's verified, so we can't include it on the main bio. You could probably fit it to trivia, as long as you add the disclaimer that it's speculative. Thanks for the add though, and don't forget to sign those talk page posts. --Wilsonator 21:34, 28 December 2009 (UTC)
- Not at all. His name is confirmed to be Mr. Jane Doe. Smashman 21:41, 28 December 2009 (UTC)
Soldier has a new hat in the files???
Checked the model files recently, and the soldier has a decapitation hat, it may be used for equaliser or valve put it as a 'meet the spy' asset with the alert board. Ollyeng 08:27, 13 January 2010 (UTC)
References to other character's country
Is it really correct to say he is the only character to make reference to the other character's country of origin? Doesn't the Demoman have a Domination line where he calls the Heavy a Bolshevik and would that not count as a reference to communism in Russia? There's one where he calls the Medic a teutonic nursemaid but I'm assuming that teutonic is used as a synonym for German. Could the same be said about Bolshevik (to Russian)? Davidius 16:52, 3 March 2010 (UTC)
- I think the article is refering to direct references to their nationality. If you want to mention the Demoman's references, then do add them, this is a Community Wiki after all. Smashman 22:52, 3 March 2010 (UTC)
Equalizer Crit-damage
The Equalizer does 195 crit damage on hit. I have tested this myself and it seems that it crits on 195 at all health stages. --TehFasterScout 03:55, 16 March 2010 (UTC)
- Hey mate, not sure how you got that information, the Equalizer's critical hit damages are definitely effected by how much health you have. I just tried it out and it ranges from 98 to 486 damage dealt for critical hits. (at 200 and 1 health, respectively) --Captain-kill 10:05, 16 March 2010 (UTC)
