The Sentry gun is an automated turret which will fire upon any enemy who walks into its range.

It is a type of building produced by the Engineer class. It costs 130 Metal to place, 200 Metal to upgrade to level two, and an additional 200 to upgrade to the third and final level. The sentry's weapons become progressively more powerful with each level. Upgrading Sentries also makes them tougher (i.e. more resistant to damage). A sentry's health increases as it is being constructed until it reaches its maximum health when it is completely built. Sentry guns are sometimes known as "turrets," "sentries," "SGs," or just simply "guns." A destroyed Sentry gun leaves 60 Metal worth of pieces.

The Sentry rotates 90 degrees to patrol the area, but is capable of rotating 360 degrees to lock on to a target, which takes a small amount of time. The Sentry can be manually rotated to face a different direction when the blueprint is shown using the special attack button (default key: MOUSE2).

Sentry guns will not fire upon enemy Spies if they are cloaked or Disguised. Sentry guns are also unable to fire if an enemy Spy attaches an Electro sapper to it.

A Sentry gun is a source of knock back.

Engineers can receive a "Sentry Gunner" achievement for racking up 10 kills with a single Sentry gun; the Engineer can die, as long as the Sentry Gun does not.

The Engineer who built the sentry will be hurt (and possibly killed) if he is in the line of fire when the Sentry attacks.

Sentry guns cannot fire through Dispensers built by the same player.

The Sentry gun makes a number of beeps every time it reverses its rotation. Level 1 sentries make 1 beep, level 2 make 2 beeps, and level 3 make 3. The higher level the sentry, the louder they are as well, so a level 1 sentry is slightly harder to hear than a level 3 sentry, this can often be used tactically.

Level 1 sentries are also smaller, so it is harder to shoot them around a corner in a way that they cannot shoot back.

Trivia

A label on the sentry gun blueprint (right) reads, "Automatic Sentry Aperatus [sic];" however, the Sentry gun manual refers to it as a "Sentry Mechanical Firing Device".
