Crafting

Scrap Metal
Level 1 Crafting Item
Reclaimed Metal
Level 2 Crafting Item
Refined Metal
Level 3 Crafting Item

Crafting is an in-game system allowing players to create specific items, such as a weapon, hat or materials for further crafting, using unwanted or duplicate items gained normally via the Item drop system. To create these items, the player must follow explicit blueprints, some of which are initially available and others of which must be discovered by the player by experimentation. After following a valid, undiscovered blueprint recipe, the player will both gain the item specified by the blueprint, and the blueprint will be added to the player's list of known blueprints. If the player attempts to craft an item without a corresponding blueprint, they will be notified that no such recipe exists, and no items will be lost.

Blueprints

Metal

Blueprint Requires Produces
Smelt Primary Weapons 3 Identical primary weapons
Eg. Force-A-Nature + Force-A-Nature + Force-A-Nature
1 Scrap Metal
Smelt Secondary Weapons 3 Identical secondary weapons
Eg. Flare gun + Flare gun + Flare gun
1 Scrap Metal
Smelt Melee Weapons 3 Identical melee weapons
Eg. Übersaw + Übersaw + Übersaw
1 Scrap Metal
Smelt Class Weapons Any 3 weapons from the same class
Eg. Ambassador + Dead Ringer + Dead Ringer (Spy Weapons)
1 Scrap Metal
Smelt Miscellaneous Items 3 Identical Misc Weapons
Eg. Camera beard + Camera beard + Camera beard
1 Scrap Metal
Smelt Tokens 3 Tokens
Eg. Heavy Token + Demoman Token + Melee Token
1 Reclaimed Metal
Combine Scrap Metal 3 Scrap Metal 1 Reclaimed Metal
Combine Reclaimed Metal 3 Reclaimed Metal 1 Refined Metal

Since the Smelt Class Weapons blueprint was altered to allow any 3 weapons from the same class, instead of one Primary, Secondary, and Melee weapon (to accommodate the Demoman, Sniper, and Spy), this has made the blueprints marked with a dagger superfluous.

Tokens

Blueprint Requires Produces
Fabricate Class Token 4 weapons from one class
Eg. Natascha + Sandvich + Sandvich + KGB (Heavy weapons)
1 Class Token
Eg. 1 Heavy Token
Fabricate Slot Token 4 weapons from one slot
Eg. Blutsauger + Huntsman + Force-A-Nature + Direct Hit
1 Slot Token
Eg. 1 Primary Token
Rebuild Class Token One Class Token (doesn't matter which) and another class' weapon
Eg. Sniper Token + Buff Banner

Eg. 1 Soldier Token
Rebuild Slot Token One Slot Token (doesn't matter which) and another slot weapon
Eg. Secondary Token + Axtinguisher
1 Slot Token
Eg. 1 Melee Token
Note: If one provides 4 identical weapons, one is given the option of creating a class token or a slot token, but not both.

Headgear

Blueprint Requires Produces
Fabricate Headgear 3 Refined Metal 1 Random Headgear
Fabricate Class Headgear 4 Refined Metal + 1 Class Token 1 Class Headgear
Rebuild Headgear 2 Hats 1 Random Headgear

Weapons

Blueprint Requires Produces
Fabricate Class Weapons 1 Class Token + 1 Slot Token + 1 Scrap Metal
Eg. Medic Token + Secondary Token + Scrap Metal

Notes

  • The Bill's hat, the Ghastly gibus, the Mildly disturbing Halloween mask, and the Cheater's lament don't count toward the Rebuild Headgear recipe.
  • The "Smelt Class Weapons" recipe no longer requires a primary weapon, a secondary weapon, and a melee weapon. As of a recent update, it is possible to use this recipe to combine Spy, Sniper, or Demoman weapons, whereas previously, it was not possible because these classes do not have unlockable weapons in all 3 slots.
  • If crafting fails, you will not lose the items.
  • Since hats do not work with the Rebuild Class Token blueprint, it is currently impossible to craft an Engineer token.
  • Unlike the Soldier's other secondary weapon, the Buff Banner, Gunboats cannot be used to craft tokens as seen in this image.
    • Neither can it be used in the recipe Smelt Class Weapons to create scrap metal along with soldier weapons.
    • This is due to the fact that the gunboats, in terms of crafting, are not defined as a secondary item, nor a soldier item.
    • It is still possible to smelt secondary weapons with 3 gunboats though.
  • Grenade, Building, PDA and Head Slot Tokens are listed in the items_game.txt file, as seen here, but none of these currently have blueprints. (Backpack example of the rare 'Head Slot Token'.)
  • Four Camera Beards cannot be crafted into a Misc Token, despite the fact that the option to Fabricate Slot Token comes up when four Camera Beards are selected for crafting.
  • Originally crafting items created the "PLAYERNAME has found: ITEMNAME" message in the server's public chat. This was later changed to "PLAYERNAME has crafted: ITEMNAME" to avoid confusion.
    • Some cases have been reported of players "finding" scrap metal. This is most likely the cause of the player's internet connection and/or computer crashing after clicking the craft button. This means the items are used in the craft recipe, yet the result of the craft remains uncollected until the player dies in a server. Giving the "PLAYERNAME has found: METALTYPE", obviously giving the false impression to others that metal types can be found.
